The Columbia River Valley east of Portland Oregon changes quickly from green to gold as the river climbs to high desert and away from the ocean. While at the mouth of the river it is rain forest, farther in, it turns to grasslands. High bluffs with extended views are found on both sides. It is an excellent day trip from Portland to The Dalles.
