There is a great deal of military history here. It begins during the Revolutionary War with a fear that the French, who sided with the colonies, would invade Gibraltar. The first tunnels and gun ports were installed then. During WWI and WWII things were expanded. To control Gibraltar meant to control the Mediterranean. Top photo looking up.
