WELCOME

This blog is about the adventure of traveling and especially the interesting people that you meet. We will share stories about people and places we have encountered from around the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, The Vatican, The Netherlands, Belgium, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. This is not a travelogue -- we leave that to Rick Steves -- this is a collection of fragments in the journey of life.

Brussels Lace Shop

As you walk around cities you find specialty shops. In Brussels we discovered a lace shop near the chocolate shop we were looking for. The waffle shops are all around, as well.
In Ireland it is wool. In Scotland it is Scotch or woolens. In Zambia it is wood working....

Looking for surprises

Buckingham Palace: so  we arrived for the obligatory photo at the gate and I moved side to side until I got one of the guard's photo between the bars of the gate. You never know, I might be able to Photoshop this into a great picture.   Or, maybe not.

In Africa

This photo is one I took in Africa. Now, I am posting it to Blogspot. My readership has dropped due to changes at Google. Either I need to have people share this site or I need to change carriers. Need your help. Comment and help me to choose. THANKS

Elephant in Africa

Met this elephant in South Africa. She was allowed to roam the area, but here she was chained as we were going to come close enough to touch her. She likely would not have been a problem, but her trainer was not sure. We saw many in the wild as well, but you would never just walk up to them.

Speaking of flying...

This is a photo of Mount Hood from our usual Alaska/Horizon flight to Portland, Oregon USA.
Black and white for effect.

Why fly Air France?

We fly Air France Premium. You get a glass of champagne before take-off and lots of service on board. The seats are great and I can sleep.  It is great for me as I cannot sleep laying down in Business Class. You get it all for a good deal less. They did not pay for this.

FOOD PHOTOS

I rarely take photos of food or people eating, but this is my granddaughter (4 years ago) eating snails. The top photo is of a partial plate of escargot with the snails served in cherry tomatoes cut in half. Actually very OK...

Happy Places: The Dolomites

People often talk about their Happy Places, those places that bring them joy. I have many such places, but none any more joyful than the Sud Tyrolian Alps - The Dolomites of Northern Italy.

Can't hit all of Europe? Stop by Mini Europe. Brussels

Mini Europe is a fun stop in Brussels and it show you the best of Europe's buildings. If can't make them all, a stop here will give you a preview. We are on our way to Budapest to see the real hot springs pool, but on the other hand we have already seen it, just not gone swimming,

Iona Abbey, Scotland

I’ve had the opportunity to go and spend time on the island of Iona, sharing in community with members of the Iona Community and with fellow travelers.  The island of Iona is a rocky island off the west coast of Scotland.  The Iona Community is an international, Christian peace and justice community centered in the ancient abbey on that island. As we begin Lent, we turn inward to remember that we belong to a community and are responsible to the family of earth brothers and sisters. Peace be with us all.

Venice/Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday, the day after Fat Tuesday, marks the beginning of Lent and the end to Carnival. The masks come off and the annual pilgrimage begins toward Easter. Venice is just the right place to celebrate this process with its long history of Carnival and the decadence of it. I love Venice and the moodiness of it. It changes with the seasons and celebrates the changes in life like the moving tides.
