Gallarus Oratory, Dingle, Peninsula, Ireland

Gallarus (meaning either "rocky headland" or "house to shelter foreigners") is a chapel located on the Dingle PeninsulaCounty Kerry, Ireland. We were there on a wonderful clear day allowing us to see the islands as well as the peninsula.

( For scale) Marietta (5' 2") nearly bumped her head on the doorway.

From the hotel room at La Villa, Italy (The Dolomites)

I think the Dolomites are a magical group of sandstone mountains in the North East area of Italy. We struck out for there from Venice. A lovely week or so with constantly changing views including a visit with the "iceman" in Bolzano. Here the hotel is actually higher than the clouds.

No flights this year so far

We had flights to China planned. Sorry they have an unknown virus. Then we booked flights to New York from San Francisco (layover 8 days) and from JFK to Panama for a visit to the rain forest. Nope; they have the virus but now it happens to have a name. No use in worrying about the flight home to SFO from Panama.

Well, we hope to get somewhere interesting next year. I will then have had a haircut.

Some of the last days of the Panda Visit - Edinburgh Zoo -2019

Close to the end of their visit, the pandas on loan from China, rest in the warm Edinburgh afternoon. The pandas with such a limited territory  have been shared throughout the world as ambassadors from China to many countries.  The zoo also is home to brown Pandas.

The Astronomical Clock, Prague CZ

Not much going on, but wait until the hour. All of the movement, bells and
wheels spring to life at the hour!

Red Rock Area of Arizona

The Red Rock Area of Arizona is often a surprise for people who are seeing it in person for the first time. We see photos in magazines or films of the area, but this is not Kansas or Bavaria. This is remarkably different. It is a place to stop and take in the geology.

Things I Learned, By Surprise, While Traveling

The Rooster has long been associated with Paris, but for me the surprise came when buying eggs. We have rented flats a couple of times in France and this means stopping by a local market for supplies. My first time in Paris, I encountered free range chicken eggs. I usually get cage free ones at home; not the same, When I tried to crack the first egg; it wouldn't. I felt like I was on Candid Camera. It took a major swing with a knife to do the deed. Friends who raise chickens tell me this is normal.

We took cooking classes in Barcelona and made paella. This is an all day thing. Thank God for Spanish wine. French wine goes a long way in attending a French Baking class.

Speaking of cooking, it is impressive to watch the cook bring together a wonderful dinner using a small portable gas stove while on safari aside the Chobe in  Botswana.

I often volunteer to open the wine.    More to come...

Things learned by surprise

The two dishes above are both escargot. The snails in the top photo are back in their shells. The lower ones are served inside cherry tomatoes. This is France. Even more French are Steak and Fries or Mussels and Fries. My favorite meal was Mussels and Fries with a side of Chardonnay at Mt. St. Michele on the Burgundy Coast.

Take your on Tylenol to Europe. Theirs is in blister packs and costs ten times what our generic does. But, buy your dental floss in Italy. You will thank me. Also Italian is their cough syrup'

In England, most medications are cheaper, so if there is a regular one you use check it out.

Tums in Slovakia bear no resemblance to Tums in the U.S.A. and you cannot tell unless you read Czech.

I learned to drink Scotch from a Scotsman. I learned how to eat Waffles from a Belgian guide.

I will list more of these in the future, but remember to drink beer, wine and bottled water everywhere.

Seville Espana

Seville is full of surprises. One favorite one is Maria Luisa Park and this building which combines offices, fountains, a boating canal. and a cool place to rest. We were there on a weekend to be entertained.

Crematorium and memorial to Jews killed at Dachau, Germany

Every school student must come to visit one of the Concentration Camps in order to graduate. They learn history and a sad lesson in sociology.

An old, nonworking, telephone booth across from a pub in Castle Gregory, Ireland.
Doesn't work, but no sense in chucking a landmark.

Long Boats on the Seine, France

I have been reluctant to take a cruise, This is not a cruise, It bed and breakfast that moves along the river. A great way to go, No 24 hour buffet.  Great French meals No gambling. Educational tours and city visits..
