WELCOME

This blog is about the adventure of traveling and especially the interesting people that you meet. We will share stories about people and places we have encountered from around the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, The Vatican, The Netherlands, Belgium, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. This is not a travelogue -- we leave that to Rick Steves -- this is a collection of fragments in the journey of life.

Nearing St. Patrick's Day

Statue of St. Patrick at the Hill of Tara north of Dublin, Ireland -  Photo by Mike
St. Patrick was probably born in what is now England, Scotland or Wales around A.D. 390. Opinions differ. Most agree that St. Patrick’s parents were Roman citizens living in the British Isles which made Patrick a Roman citizen.
At the age of 16 he was taken captive by Irish raiders and held for six years. He fled to England, where he received religious instruction before returning to Ireland to serve as a missionary.
Green has been used by supporters of Irish independence who used the color to represent their cause in the 18th century and later. Indeed, green is often used to denote Ireland today but that has nothing to do with St. Patrick.
I am a Scot-Irish and therefore ought to wear Orange on St. Patrick's Day, but it takes too much explaining.
