America's greatness, until recently, has been in its leadership and respect around the world. It has not been in its winning over other countries, but in leading and showing an ethical and moral uprightness. If we alienate - and we have - country after country with which we share this planet, we will have lost the position that was uniquely ours. Indeed, in the past, there have been a few of us considered "ugly Americans", but for the most part the world has embraced us. We helped save Europe twice. We have given much to protect Asia and Africa. When a famine hits we have been there. We have been seen as givers. Our new posture is self-serving and xenophobic and that is sad. On every trip I make, I try to embody an America who still cares and knows how fortunate we are. For all of our problems, we have a much easier life than so many else in the world.
The best adventures are those that contain surprises. There are wonders to be discovered by getting lost in the Highlands of Scotland or on the back roads of New England. There may just be a chance to meet a special character who changes your life. In ancient times these were sometimes known as angels.
WELCOME
This blog is about the adventure of traveling and especially the interesting people that you meet. We will share stories about people and places we have encountered from around the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, The Vatican, The Netherlands, Belgium, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. This is not a travelogue -- we leave that to Rick Steves -- this is a collection of fragments in the journey of life.
