WELCOME

This blog is about the adventure of traveling and especially the interesting people that you meet. We will share stories about people and places we have encountered from around the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, The Vatican, The Netherlands, Belgium, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. This is not a travelogue -- we leave that to Rick Steves -- this is a collection of fragments in the journey of life.

A View of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a walkable city, but it is more fun to hire a small boat
and a guide and go exploring.

Cemetery near the Burns' Monument and American Embassy

It is good fun to rummage around in old cemeteries. Especially in foreign
countries, it is a way of getting in touch with history and values.
Headstones provide lots of information. Their style alone tells you much.
These from Edinburgh, Scotland populated a great cemetery between the
American Embassy and The Palace of Holyrood House.

Three Faces of the Dolomites

In every adventure there are shades of reality. One is what you hope to encounter. The second is what you see. The third is the memory which can change both into something else.
The Dolomites of Northern Italy were a long time goal. I am not sure where I first saw a photo of them, but I had to go and see them. Then I saw them and they did not disappoint. Finally, I took   hundreds of my own photos and allow them to bring back memories.
I took the top photo and then with computer magic enlarged it twice. Each time seeing something different or more clearly. This is how I often explore. I see things at a distance. Maybe through the eyes of another. Then I see them and then replay the experience in my mind's eye.
The single object has a variety of meanings for me. Expectation - experience - memory. Every place in the world I visit, I encounter them at least three times. I am not sure which is the best.

Fortress in Ronda Spain

It does not seem like three years ago that we drove around Spain enjoying the people, the food and the culture. Ronda is a great visit. A city built on two cliffs joined by a bridge. Cool.

Cars stopped for air traffic in Gibraltar

Looking down from the Rock one can see the cars stopped and waiting for the plane to land. Not a good deal of extra room in Gibraltar.

Reasons not to travel

Looking out from the Rock Hotel at the Straights of Gibraltar. Spain to the right, Morocco to the left.

There are many reasons to stay home and not to travel. First, it is expensive; although so is ignorance of life in other parts of the world. But, expense is relative. You don't have to spend buckets to go interesting places. Second, it is dangerous. Well, my county in the US is likely more dangerous. Staying home is not much safer. Third, there is not enough time. I'll guess that you never waste any time at home. Oh, you do? A week in Spain is no waste and pays off in understanding.

Truth: most excuses are lame, unless you are lame and then you still can travel if you plan it.

Always nice to plan ahead

Getting ready to bard train at CDG Paris to Brussels.
Always good to do some planning if you do not know the language.
Is this the right train? What does that sign say?

Anywhere else it would be a showstopper -
in the Louvre it is just another work of art...

these seals resting on the buoy.  A fun trip from the city.

A great physical introduction to Segovia Spain.
The aqueduct.
This is a great city to visit. You are best off in walking shoes.

Helpful hint: Enter the Louvre through the Carousel Entrance.

Near the Carousel is an entrance off the street which takes you to underground cafes and shopping. More importantly, it takes you into the Louvre without long lines.
