WELCOME

This blog is about the adventure of traveling and especially the interesting people that you meet. We will share stories about people and places we have encountered from around the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, The Vatican, The Netherlands, Belgium, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. This is not a travelogue -- we leave that to Rick Steves -- this is a collection of fragments in the journey of life.

The pulpit: collected experiences

I can imagine that men who own tie factories visit tie shops on vacation. Chefs probably look for the best place to eat. I am a member of the clergy.
For some 40 years I stood in pulpits and preached. A good sermon is a work of art. Most great churches are also works of art. Over the years when I am visiting somewhere and find myself in a church I feel drawn to step behind the pulpit. The photo above is one in St. Stephan's in Verona, Italy. I have "mounted" the pulpit in Saint Giles in Edinburgh. I have led worship in a small church on the Navajo Reservation in Leupp Arizona. I have preached in the ghetto in Los Angeles. I have tested them all over Ireland. Lots more.
The most awe inspiring was at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church in Montgomery Alabama. It is where Martin Luther King was pastor. In my mind I saw the congregation as I stood.
I share this because I hope that people do not travel to shop or just see some buildings. I hope you will collect experiences.
