Close off the Royal Mile Edinburgh Scotland

Off of the Royal Mile (and many other streets in the United Kingdom) 
there are what are called "Closes"
which are like alleys. They are where people lived in former days.
Some are deep into the earth and dark. Some like the one above lead to pretty courtyards.
