WELCOME

This blog is about the adventure of traveling and especially the interesting people that you meet. We will share stories about people and places we have encountered from around the United States, Ireland, Scotland, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, The Vatican, The Netherlands, Belgium, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. This is not a travelogue -- we leave that to Rick Steves -- this is a collection of fragments in the journey of life.

Simple Holocaust Memorial In Budapest

With the Chain Bridge in the background, this simple bronze set of shoes is a graphic reminder of the Nazis and their victims. At this spot along the Danube, Jews were lined up and told to take off their shoes.  Shoe leather was not to be wasted. Then they were mowed down by rifle fire, falling into the river. There are men's shoes, women's shoes and the shoes of children. I have visited the prison camp pf Dachau  in Germany and while it is dramatic, it is not as emotionally overwhelming as this.
