The Close in Scotland, Ireland and England

Edinburgh, Scotland
In the United States we might call it a passageway or an alley, 
but in several countries they are called a "close".
I suppose that it is because they are narrow.
Most of life in the ancient cities was done in the close leaving the wide streets for commerce.
You will note that on the end of the close is the "real" country.
